If you’re a California Resident with an older system(10+ years old), you might have heard about the R-22 Phase-Out.

R-22 is a refrigerant used in older AC systems and is being phased out of production because it damages the ozone layer and is harmful to the environment.

EPA has prohibited the manufacture of new air-conditioning systems that use R-22.

  • How do I tell if my AC system uses R-22?

  • What is happening to R-22?

  • How does this phase-out impact me?

Below we’ll break down the answers and explain how the phase-out will impact you financially.

Rather have an HVAC professional inspect your AC for R-22 and explain your options? Contact SoCal Climate Control. We have convenient 2-hour appointment windows.

How Do I tell if my AC system uses R-22?

To determine if your HVAC unit uses R-22, you’ll want to look at the manufacturer’s label on the outside unit. On the label, next to the “FIELD CHARGED”, look for either R-22 or HCFC-22, they both mean the same thing.

If the label says R-22 or HCFC-22, your system runs on R-22 refrigerant. Which is banned by the EPA.

What’s happening to R-22 or HCFC-22?

On January 1st, 2020, the EPA released a statement:

“In 2020, R-22 will no longer be produced or imported. After 2020, only recovered, recycled, or reclaimed supplies of R-22 will be available. The production (not use) of R-22 is being phased out. You are not required to stop using R-22 air conditioners nor to replace existing equipment.”

In short, HVAC manufacturers are no longer allowed to produce equipment with R-22 or HCFC-22, But it is not illegal to buy or use.

How Does This Phase-out Impact me?

Although HVAC companies can still buy R-22, there is a limited supply since it’s no longer being produced. So, eventually, the supply will run out.

HOME OWNERS HAVE THREE OPTIONS:

1. Retrofit your current R-22 AC system to use R-410A:

R-410A is a new refrigerant type. It’s environmentally friendly and manufacturers can produce it.

Retrofitting your AC system to use R-410A is the most cost affective option of the three. However, this might not be possible for your AC system and also might void your manufacturer’s warranty. You’ll want to check with the manufacturer of your AC system to determine whether or not retrofitting your AC system is a good option for you.

2. Continue to maintain your current R-22 AC system:

While you can continue to maintain your current system with R-22, the supply will continue to dwindle until it runs out. While it is still available, you should expect the cost of R-22 to increase as the supply decreases, making refrigerant more and more costly.  That is if you can evfen find someone who will maintain the older system.

3. Replace your AC system with an R-410A AC system:

Over time, as R-22 becomes harder and harder to find, your R-22 AC system will not be able to be repaired anymore and must be replaced.

While it’s expensive to replace your AC system, changing to an R-410A AC system can be cost-effective.  Use our Energy Savings Calculator to learn more.

Reminder, if your system uses R-22, it’s likely 10+ years old, which means you’ll probably need to replace it in the near future anyway. So, rather than continue to pay for R-22, it may be more cost-effective to replace your entire system now vs. later.

Great people. A year ago they replaced my duct work so called them when I needed a new furnace. Prompt, quick turn around and very professional. I totally recommend this company!! On the same day, they installed a tankless water heater. These peeps are amazing!

In the 5 years that I have lived in my SF valley home, I have had my AC and furnace die on me. Mike and his team gave me a great deal on new HVAC system, and 2 years later the furnace. I work in the construction industry, and confirmed quality installation and equipment. They paid attention to the little things too, which carries over in my experience. SoCal did maintenance, and the technician Dave recommended improving the duct intakes and filter system. Cannot wait for my home to be colder than a polar bear’s toenails this summer.

David Sire

Overall, this was a very good experience. Customer service was great! The price was reasonable. Installation was scheduled 2 days after we purchased the HVAC system,. They installed the system in approximately 5 hours, and there was no mess. This a very professional operation

Mike sent his team out when our AC failed on the hottest day. It was a late Saturday afternoon and we were staring down having to wait until Monday at the earliest to get someone out. Mike immediately told me his team would be there within 90 minutes, and they showed up on a Saturday evening within the hour! Great service!

Mary Goldstein

Wonderful company! From the moment they came to give us a bid for their services to the last minute they were here. Very professional, knowledgeable, and genuine. You will not spend any money you don’t need to spend, they are honest about the work your home needs done, but also honor whatever services you’d like to have done. They respond quickly, and promptly. We had our vents/registers cleaned, old ducts removed, & new ones installed, they took care of the whole process leaving nothing behind. Charles and his crew were great! Respectful, professional, and always on time. Would highly recommend.
